Every technical term from the Vertex² specifications and manual explained in plain language: what it is, why it matters for your picture or sound, and exactly how you use it on the HDfury Vertex². Click any term.
Video signal
- HDMI 2.0bThe HDMI generation the Vertex² is built on: up to 18 Gbps, 4K60, HDR10/HLG.
- 18 Gbps / 600 MHz bandwidthThe maximum data rate of HDMI 2.0 — the Vertex² passes it through untouched.
- Chroma subsampling: 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0How much colour detail travels with the picture; 4:4:4 is full colour, 4:2:0 is what discs and streaming use.
- Colour depth: 8, 10, 12, 16-bit (deep colour)How many brightness steps each colour channel has; 10-bit or more avoids banding in HDR.
- 4K120 4:2:0 and 8K30 4:2:0The highest resolutions/frame rates that fit through 18 Gbps — only with 4:2:0 8-bit colour.
HDR & colour
- HDR10The baseline HDR format: 10-bit, PQ curve, BT.2020 with static metadata.
- HDR10+Samsung/Panasonic's HDR format with dynamic (per-scene) metadata, royalty-free.
- HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)The broadcast HDR format from BBC/NHK used by TV channels and YouTube; no metadata.
- Dolby Vision (DV)Dolby's premium HDR format: 12-bit, dynamic metadata, tone-mapped per scene.
- LLDV (Low-Latency Dolby Vision)Dolby Vision tone-mapped by the player and sent as 12-bit 4:2:2 — usable on any HDR10 display via the Vertex².
- HDR metadata: MaxCLL, MaxFALL, mastering displayThe numbers inside an HDR10 signal that tell a display how bright the content is.
- Tmax / Tmin (DV datablock luminance)The maximum and minimum brightness you tell a Dolby Vision player your display can show.
- EOTF / PQ (SMPTE ST 2084)The brightness curve of HDR: PQ for HDR10/Dolby Vision, HLG for broadcast, gamma for SDR.
- Colour space & primaries: BT.709, BT.2020, DCI-P3How wide the palette of colours is: BT.709 for HD, DCI-P3 for cinema, BT.2020 for UHD/HDR.
- xvYCCSony's extended colour standard from the HDMI 1.3 era, still passed by the Vertex².
HDCP & EDID
- HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2The copy protection on HDMI; a mismatch between versions gives a black screen.
- HDCP DoctorThe Vertex² feature that converts HDCP 2.2 ↔ 1.4 in both directions on every channel.
- EDIDThe 'ID card' a display sends to a source listing what it can do — the Vertex² lets you rewrite it.
- Automix EDIDThe Vertex² builds an EDID automatically from your connected displays plus flags you choose.
- Custom EDID slots (1–10) and the EDID bankTen user slots plus 90 ready-made EDIDs for every common scenario.
- Infoframes: AVI, VSIF, SPD, AUD, HVS, HFVSmall data packets sent with every frame that describe the picture, sound and source.
- Hot plug (HPD), Rsense and +5VThe handshake signals on an HDMI cable that tell a source a display is present.
- TMDSThe signalling method HDMI 2.0 uses; the Vertex² detects its clock to know a source is really active.
Scaling & modes
- Matrix vs. splitter vs. switcherSplitter = one source to two displays; matrix = two different sources to two displays at once.
- Upscaling & downscaling (4K ↔ 1080p, DCI 4K)Changing resolution so every connected device gets the best signal it can accept.
- TX0 / TX1 outputs and RX0–RX3 inputsHDfury's names for the two video outputs (TX0 = main/upscale, TX1 = downscale) and the four inputs.
- Input lag (< 1 ms)The delay a device adds to the picture — the Vertex² adds only a few pixel clocks.
- 3D (frame packing)3D Blu-ray signals pass through the Vertex² and can trigger projector macros.
Audio
- Audio formats: PCM, bitstream, Atmos, DTS:X, TrueHD, DD+, DTS-HD MA, HBREvery sound format that can travel over HDMI — the Vertex² passes them all untouched.
- ARC and eARCSending the TV's own sound (apps, tuner) back down the HDMI cable to a receiver.
- HDMI Audio out (720p/1080p audio-only output)The third HDMI output: any audio format, wrapped in a simple 1080p picture, for any AVR.
- S/PDIF optical (TOSLINK) and analog L/RThe combined 3.5 mm jack outputs stereo analog or 5.1 digital optical sound.
Control & connections
- CEC (Consumer Electronics Control)One-remote control commands that travel over HDMI; needed for ARC/eARC.
- RS232, IP/Telnet and the public APISerial and network commands to control the Vertex² and to let it control your projector.
- RS232 macros (projector picture-mode automation)The Vertex² sends a projector command when the content type changes — SDR, HDR10, HLG, DV, 3D…
- IR control (IR sensor, IR RX and Pronto codes)Control the Vertex² with any universal remote; codes are in Harmony and iRule.
- Embedded web serverThe Vertex² is controlled from a web page hosted on the unit itself — no software to install.
- OSD (on-screen display) and the OLEDSignal information shown on the display itself (OSD) and on the unit's blue OLED.
- Autoswitch (On Power / On Sense)Automatically selecting the input that just became active — even for Apple TV and Xbox.
